The Idea of Japan [I]
授業内容 This course focuses on the way Japan has been perceived over the century 1868-1968, with a focus on Western, especially British, media. In The Idea of Japan (I), we will look at the Western perceptions of Japan from the Meiji period until the early 1960s. The media studied will be newspapers, books, postcards and pamphlets. The material will be available in weekly downloads from the course homepage. Students must download and study these weekly handouts before the class, and be ready to discuss them in class.

The Idea of Japan [II]
授業内容 This course focuses on the way Japan has been perceived since the 1960s, with a focus on Western, especially British, media. In The Idea of Japan (II), we examine the presentation of Japan in British and American media from the US Occupation of Japan until the present. The media studied will be newspapers, books, feature films, cartoons and other TV programmes. Students must download and study these before the class, and be ready to analyse and discuss them in class.
成績評価 Students will be assessed on their participation in class discussions and their performance in short weekly reports and in a long essay, written in English. Weekly attendance is essential.
